Chicago was hit with a snow storm last night and with it being the Christmas season I can't think of anything better than curling up with a good book or movie and a cup of hot chocolate. If you have been to Paris you may have stopped by the famous Angelina cafe on Rue de Rivoli for their famous hot chocolate.
This recipe is based on the Angelina recipe. I dusted the rim of the glass with peppermint and added marshmallows and these adorable straws my friend Jess sent me. The traditional Angelina hot chocolate comes with a side of fresh whipped cream. Follow the recipe below which I found on Pinterest which is a recipe from wellplated.com I encourage you to be creative add peppermint or make it spicy!
1 1/2 cups whole milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
2 teaspoons heavy powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon espresso powder (I didn't add this but liked the hint of peppermint instead)
8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, at least 70%, chopped
Giant bowl of whipped cream for serving
1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, whisk together the whole milk, heavy cream, powdered sugar, and espresso powder until small bubble appear around edges. Do not allow the mixture to boil.
2. Remove from saucepan from heat and stir in the chopped chocolate until melted, returning the sauce to low heat if needed for the chocolate to melt completely. Serve warm, topped with lots of whipped creme.
* my chocolate was purchased from Trader Joe's and it was so similar to feeling back in Paris. You can use other chocolates including my favorite Vosges if you want something even more decadent.
1 cup whipping creme
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
Keep the whisk and bowl in the freezer for 20 minutes before preparing.
