A Day in Monaco

When it came to deciding where we would travel to in the South of France, Monaco was a must on our list. I have been a few times but just to Monte Carlo. It was a family request to go and since I negotiated Menton, I couldn’t argue. The train from Nice to Monaco is 22 minutes and they come about every 15 minutes. It was one of the easiest trips we took with the kids.

My brother in law really wanted to show Emma and Bobby the changing of the guards. This happens at 11:55 am. We arrived early since we heard different times and we didn’t want to miss it. When I say it was hot, that is an understatement. My sister and brother in law carried both kids on their shoulders not to miss the changing of the guards.

The hike up the hill to the Palace is a steep one. You can take breaks on the stairs but during peak season you will run into a lot of people on your way up and down. There are a few spots for drinks right at the very top to cool down. My Dad and brother in law really enjoyed the Monaco beer cocktail which was beer and grenadine. I don’t drink beer but they raved about it enough that it may be worth a try when in Monaco.

There was a market just below us that we saw on our walk up to the top. I really wanted to go but it was finished by the time we made our way back down.

We ended up eating at the top of Monaco after a quick search for Italian food. It was extremely hot and everyone was hungry. We ate at La Tavernetta which was accommodating to kids and the service was quick for Europe. My brother in law ranked this as one of the highest on the trip.

There was also a market Le Marche de la Condamine that was inside. There were options for small plates, pizza, and fresh pasta made to order. This looked like a great option for lunch. I would check it out next time if we go back.

After lunch, we had a little time to explore before getting back on the train. I really didn’t know what to expect with Monaco but I really enjoyed finding the tiny empty streets filled with color.
